What is horary astrology?
The word ‘Horary’ relates to ‘hour’, or 'of the moment'. In astrology, a question is asked of the ‘cosmos’ and when the astrologer has the question clear in his/her mind, that is the ‘hour’ at which the chart for the question is drawn. The astrologer will use his/her location to set the chart and this simple fact means that the answer will be specific to the astrologer and the question asked. The astrologer then uses a ’system’ to ‘read’ the chart which is basically interpreting the symbolic meanings of planets within houses and signs. It has the flavour of divination, the magic of alchemy and the possibility of enlightenment.
Horary History
Horary astrology has been practised for thousands of years. In the 17th century, the astrologer William Lilly pefected the art of horary and wrote a seminal text called ‘Christian Astrology’ which has 3 volumes, the second of which pertains to horary astrology in particular. It is believed that the title ‘Christian’ was used so as to ‘include’ the Church at a time of religious turmoil.
What sort of question can you ask?
Essentially any question can be asked - more important is that it is ‘radical’ which means that it must be of some import to the person asking the question and the astrolger must have a clear understanding of the question. The answer can be a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but there is usually far more information available. Here are a few examples of questions you can ask.
Perhaps your dog or cat has gone missing - Where is my dog/cat? Depending on the length of time the pet has been missing the question can change to Will my dog/cat come home? Is my dog/cat dead or alive? etc.
There are many areas which are covered, here are just a few - property, contracts, friendships, education/study, illness, lost objects, career/work matters, travel, neighbours, financial matters, wills/deeds, court cases and trials, siblings and parents, buildings, children and so on. Generally speaking you are asking for guidance on the problem you have - this guidance comes from the cosmos - because it holds the basic premise that we are connected with everything in the cosmos.
